I think the quality of tea used at Cha House is a bit better than most other options in the area and their boba (tapioca pearls) have just the right amount of softness and chewy bite. But let’s face it, Cha House is focused on the cha (boba tea) but actually does a really nice job with the savory eats, too! The food menu runs from scallion pancakes to rice bowls and popcorn shrimp. The classic stewed tea serves up tasty, minced pork over rice with some steamed veggies and a soy egg. Their relatives' Taiwanese tea farm and their parents' Taipei noodle shop inspired them to open their own concept in the Triangle. After ordering up your eats you can grab a seat and make yourself comfortable. It usually takes 5 to 15 minutes to put your order together so it’s a good time to find your perch at Cha House. Communal high tops, window seating on the edges, and there’s even a funky little couch at the end of the space, set under white globe lighting.

Part cafe, part eatery, part tea house, the modern space feels pretty organic with pops of green and plants around the space. And there’s definitely room to stretch out in for studying or meeting up with friends. Upfront for the counter order, you’ll find chalkboard menus covering a wide swath of Taiwanese based drink and food. From boba tea to rice plates, snacks, and more but all pretty delicious in my opinion. You can customize your boba in a thousand different ways at Cha House. From tea to toppings along with various types of milks along with the amount of ice and sugar in your drink!

They rose before the sun every day to make their beloved cold noodle dishes and Oolong tea, showing me the indispensable value of hard work from an early age. Most importantly though, their familial embrace of every customer inspired me to one day open my own shop fueled by the same warm service and quality food. Although operating our restaurant undoubtedly kept the family busy, we still found time for frequent visits to my aunt and uncle’s tea fields in the mountainous Nantou region. Running through the seemingly endless rows of tea leaves, while simultaneously learning the many aspects of tea plant cultivation and selection, became a regular and cherished part of my childhood. These carefree, yet formative experiences would eventually help sow the seeds of my vision to open a tea house in America.

Whether you’re in the mood for Wintermelon black tea, spiced Chai, mango matcha or salted caramel milk tea, Cha House offers plenty of distinctive choices in hot and cold versions. Lulu said she and Julia spent much of their youth working in their parents' busy noodle bar, so she was ready for the hard work it takes to open a restaurant. "Sometimes we get a little worried because we have these bulk items out on the ocean," Andy laughed. Lulu, Julia and Andy place a mass order for Cha House every three to six months. Tea leaves and other ingredients are shipped overseas to New York then delivered to North Carolina. Cha House co-owners Julia, Lulu and Lulu's husband, Andy, were living in Taiwan before they moved to the United States to open their first cafe on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Andy and Lulu said opening their new Cary location during the COVID-19 pandemic isn't ideal, but they're still excited to welcome customers. To protect the community and their employees, Cha House has decided to close their dining area and keep orders to-go and carry out for now. Any beverage at Cha House can be topped with a cheese cap -- a delicious combination of cream and cream cheese that adds a rich, frothy layer to tea drinks.
When the doors opened in 2018, Julia and Lulu were proud to serve drinks made with tea straight from the farm their relatives own in Taiwan. "Long story short, we kind of fell in love with the area," said Andy. "We thought this could be good -- it's family friendly and there's potential for small businesses." Running the newest Cha House, slated to open in late September, is an exciting venture for Andy and Lulu, who live in Apex and have three young children. Julia will stay in Chapel Hill to run the Franklin Street location.

Lulu said their family tea farmer doesn't normally ship products to America -- she had to find a company to help import the tea.
